What your liver wants to tell you – Part Two

Continued from Part One

What else do I manufacture?

Besides bile and glycogen, I also produce:

* Albumin, which is the most important protein of all the plasma proteins. Its role is to maintain the proper of liquid in the vascular area to maintain sufficient blood pressure.

It’s also a carrier of fat-soluble substances. When there is an albumin shortage, water seeps out of your vessels and participates in the formation of lower limb edema, or the fluid called “ascites” in your abdomen.

It transports thyroid hormones, free fatty acids, fat soluble hormones, bilirubin, and essential minerals such as calcium.

Don’t forget that albumin also transports medications and drugs. So, if you abuse those, you intoxicate as well.

Now that you know this, I hope that I can count on you to take fewer unnecessary antibiotics, uppers, downers, sleeping pills, painkillers, anxiolytics, and antidepressants. And don’t forget the assorted artificial hormones brought on by contraception pills or hormone replacement therapy (HRT), all of which you can become dependent. Oh, I almost forgot, more anti-hormones taken when the cancer gets to you.

The excessive consumption of early contraception pills for girls, and increasingly later on during menopause are the main reason for the epidemic of breast cancer. A social plague that is not about to disappear given the advertising power of hormones manufacturers.

I, your liver, suffer from these excess hormones. I can’t expel all of them. I makes me sick often, but very few women know these excess hormones have on me. Later on, I will tell you more the negative consequences.

Let’s face it. Most women are deceived by pharmaceutical companies, with all these supposedly helpful treatments. They lead you to believe there is no other alternatives to withstand the evils of civilization: stress, various pollutions, chemical contraceptives or HRT you who transform into a “hormonal female”.

* Coagulation proteins: I am the only one in your body to give you this benefit. There procoagulant proteins which promote blood clotting and anticoagulant proteins that prevent excessive blood clotting. So there is a need for necessary balance.

I especially synthesize procoagulant proteins (prothrombin, proaccelerin, proconvertine and antihemophilic factors). In case of liver failure – cirrhosis for example – there can be a coagulation deficiency, bleeding can happen and difficult to stop.

* Transferrin transports iron in your blood and ferritin stores it in me, thereby adjusting the gastrointestinal absorption of iron.

* Ceruloplasmin transports copper.

* Inflammatory proteins, first CRP (C-reactive protein), are always increased in case of infection or inflammation, and secondarily orosomucoid which is a glycoprotein whose rate increases later in case of inflammation.

* Haptoglobin, a glycoprotein that can bind to hemoglobin is made late in the event of ignition.

* Macroglobulin is a special protein that results when there is a renal problem and can be found in urine.

* Transcobalamin, a protein insuring vitamin B12 transport.

I am also able to manufacture triglycerides from 3 fatty acids, but also lipoproteins which act as carriers.

I also manufactures cholesterol, 70% of the total in our body, in addition to what you send me with your diet (30%), often in excess with too many animal products (mainly dairy products, red meat and cold cuts).

So that specialists understand what I’m talking about, remember that my hepatocytes produce cholesterol from molecules brought on by an animal and vegetable diet (cholesterol combines acetate, glutarate and squalene).

Cholesterol is the central core of the chemical formula essential so that your adrenal glands produce stress hormones (glucocorticoids), your skin from the sun synthesizing vitamin D (cholecalciferol), testosterone in your testes, ovaries (and some adrenals, especially at menopause) estrogen and progesterone.

I can also degrade cholesterol if you send me too much by turning it into bile acids and removing with the bile.

You should also know that the labs that push you to take contraceptive hormones or menopausal hormones for many years, hide from you that these drugs increase your cholesterol levels above standards. The consequence is they ten recommend you take another drug, statin with so many side effects that I, your liver, am not able to protect you from.

Finally, I manufacture numerous growth factors involved in tissue growth, cell renewal and stem cells transformation into differentiated cells such as hepatocytes or immune cells as your body needs them.

What I store

I can also keep in reserve, in addition to sugars or fats, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, K and E).

While I can keep 2 days of reserve sugar as glycogen, I am also able to store vitamin A, vitamin E or a little of vitamin D.

But be careful to not stuff me excess vitamin A, vitamin E or D. My storage capacities are not unlimited.

When you send me too much vitamin A, I can develop what is called a “peliosis hepatis” that can make your body feel very tired. I once observed such case in a woman who gorged herself with kilos of carrot every week. She assumed it would be good for her. Not so.

What I metabolize or destroy

I know how to decompose insulin when there is too much coming from your pancreas. The pancreas is also a great friend of mine. I hope to tell you more about him in a future message.

When I receive hormones from contraception pills (always in too high doses, even in the so-called low-dose pills), I capture the radical chemical called “ETHYL” who never did me good in order to expel these synthetic hormone foreign to your body. These hormones are designed to put your two ovaries to sleep so they don’t release any egg a woman doesn’t want a baby.

Very few women know that after seven years of taking contraception pills, they should check the absence of anomalies by taking an ultrasound of me, your liver. Please check with your physician.

I am able to regenerate myself or regrow when replaced by transplantation when I’m very sick. With a new liver, I give life again!

You can’t live without me, your liver

You, humans have known this since ancient Greece through the myth of Prometheus who was trying to steal fire from Zeus. Prometheus thought it was essential that men have access to fire to make the best use of cooking, arts and metallurgic techniques.

Angry at Prometheus, Zeus punishes him. He gets him bound to the top of the Caucasus and has his liver devoured by an eagle every day. And the liver that I am regenerated each night! As you can see, I’m a pretty cool organ!

But to regenerate you have to give me the best nutrients. No alcohol, not too much sugar, good quality fat only, but add good hepatoprotective amino acids. There are 3 in particular I love: valine (dairy products, grains, meat, mushrooms, peanuts, and soy protein), leucine (cheese, soybeans, beef, chicken, pork, seeds and nuts, fish, seafood, peanuts, and beans) and isoleucine (eggs, soy protein, seaweed, turkey, chicken, lamb, cheese, and fish).

All it takes is 10% of a healthy myself or 150 grams for me to rebuild myself entirely and to grow back to 1500 g in 6 months. Nice, eh? I bet you can’t do that.

I’m not the only one

But, as good as I am, I’m not the only organ to able to regenerate itself.

I’m pretty sure your intestines, your kidneys, and your pancreas will have their own story to share about this. Your brain will probably help you discover how to grow extra neurons when needed.

When I am very sick and unable to regenerate, the best solution is to replace me. If, for example, I am the diseased liver of a child, a sibling, a father or mother can give this child – if they are compatible – a portion of their healthy liver (20-30%) which will miraculously replace all of the sick liver sick since I can thus regenerate and grow an whole brand new liver in 4 to 6 months.

I think that by now, you’re must be exhausted by all information I just gave you. Time for you and I to rest.

By now, you have realized that you should be very nice to me, your liver, that works so hard to keep you healthy.”

I, for one, can only thank my liver for taking such good care of me, the human. He has my gratitude.
